An ten-member Board of Directors oversees the activities of Liberty's Promise. The Board, which meets quarterly, represents senior professionals from the private and nonprofit sectors and includes two youth representatives. Board members are:
- Ms. Hiwot Ayalew: A participant in both our civics and internship programs, Ms. Ayalew left her family in Ethiopia to come to America in August 2006. At her internship at Catholic Community Services of Montgomery County, she impressed the entire staff with her maturity, willingness to try new things, and determination to do the best job possible. Ms. Ayalew speaks English, Amharic, and Italian. She is currently enrolled at Strayer University and also works there as a Student Account Representative.
- Ms. Meredith Dukes: Born and raised in the United States, Ms. Dukes has traveled extensively and frequently lived abroad. She holds an M.S. in Economics and International Business from the University of South Carolina and has led several international student associations and diversity associations. Ms. Dukes, fluent in Spanish, is a communications consultant with Accenture and a member of the Washington, D.C. Rotaract Club, an international service organization. She was a volunteer consultant for Liberty's Promise before joining the Board in 2007 and continues to be inspired by Liberty's Promise youth.
- Ms. Krista Hendry (Board Chairperson): Ms. Hendry is the Executive Director of The Fund for Peace, an organization that works to prevent war and alleviate the conditions that cause war. She also serves as director of the Human Rights and Business Roundtable, engaging businesses, governments, and non-governmental organizations on issues related to sustainable development and security in weak and failing states. She has an MBA from Georgetown University and a BA from the University of Virginia.
- Mr. Abdul Kargbo: Born in Sierra Leone, Mr. Kargbo speaks Russian, French, and Krio. He is actively engaged in immigrant education and assimilation, as well as anti-trafficking and other social-justice issues in the Washington DC Metro area and has worked with such organizations as the Education Sector. Mr. Kargbo is a certified teacher of English as a Second Language and has more than 10 years of experience teaching both in the United States and abroad. Mr. Kargbo holds a Master of International Politics from the University of London and an honor's degree in History from St. Mary's College of Maryland.
- Ms. Isabel Mayer: Ms. Mayer was born and raised in Rochester, NY. Her parents emigrated from Cuba to the U.S. in 1970. She is bilingual in Spanish and English. She started working part-time for Wegmans Food Markets in high school. She loved it so much, she made it her career and has worked there for the past 18 years. Currently, Ms. Mayer is employed in Wegmans' Workforce Planning and Diversity Department. She and her husband (who also works for the company) moved to Virginia when Wegmans' first store opened in Dulles, VA six years ago. She first became involved with Liberty's Promise in 2004 and became a Board Member in 2008. She lives in Leesburg, VA with her husband and daughter.
- Ms. Martina McAndrew: Ms. McAndrew currently leads the national recruitment efforts for Baker Tilly, the 13th largest accounting and advisory firm in the U.S. Prior to her current role, Martina spent eight years leading the recruitment department at Beers + Cutler, a DC-based accounting and consulting firm that merged with Baker Tilly in December 2009. Previously, she directed the staffing efforts for Marriott’s information technology group worldwide. Martina is a certified Senior Human Resources Professional (SPHR) and serves on the Staffing Expertise Panel for the Society for Human Resource Management. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley and an MBA from George Washington University. Born and raised (until the age of 10) in the Philippines, Martina now lives in Alexandria, VA with her husband David and their dog Berkeley.
- Ms. Ana Morales: Originally from Guatemala, Ms. Morales is currently the Vice President of Business Development for the Bank of Georgetown. Ms. Morales has been in the banking industry since 2001, most recently with Eagle Bank in Washington, D.C., as assistant vice president and commercial deposits officer. Prior to that, she held several positions with Fidelity & Trust, including branch manager. Ms. Morales earned an associate’s degree in business management from Montgomery College in Rockville, Md. She also completed courses towards a bachelor’s degree in business management at University of Maryland and completed the Maryland Banking School program in 2008.
- Mr. Willem Roos: Originally from South Africa, Mr. Roos currently serves as an Audit Senior Manager in SC&H Group's Tax & Advisory Services practice. Mr. Roos has over 15 years of professional experience with financial reporting, budgeting and cost accounting for not-for-profit organizations. Prior to joining SC&H Group, Mr. Roos spent several years at a regional accounting and consulting firm in San Francisco directing external and internal audit engagements for a variety of healthcare, not-for-profit and privately held corporations. Mr. Roos is a graduate of the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa and holds a B.S. degree in Accounting. Mr. Roos is a Certified Public Accountant licensed to practice in Virginia and California and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
- Mr. Shreedhar Shah: Mr. Shah is currently President of Shah & Associates, Inc., a Power Systems Engineering firm located in Gaithersburg, MD. He believes strongly in helping immigrants improve their life through education, which will eventually lead to better employment opportunities. He is also actively involved with business issues relating to small business, and sits on the Maryland Department of Transportation Minority Business Enterprise Advisory Committee. He was a part of Governor Martin O'Malley's Transition Team in January 2007, specifically for his expertise on small and minority-owned businesses. Mr. Shah holds a Masters in Business Administration from Georgetown University, and a BSBA in Finance from The Ohio State University.
- Ms. Maira Ventura: Ms. Ventura was born in El Salvador and came to the U.S. in 1992. She is fluent in Spanish and English. Ms. Ventura was a participant in our Arlington community civics program and interned with the Arlington Community Foundation through Opportunities Plus. Currently, she is a sophomore at Marymount University pursuing a degree in Mathematics. In her spare time, she tutors students struggling in math. She plans to pursue a career as an actuary upon graduation.
