Joseph, 19 year-old asylee from Liberia

Joseph, a high school senior, lives with his mother and four brothers and sisters in Gaithersburg. His first experience in the United States after emigrating from Liberia two years ago was “getting lost in the corridors of Watkins Mill High School.” Today, Joseph looks towards a future in politics and has made a step towards achieving this dream by participating in a Liberty’s Promise internship in a political campaign. “I loved the internship,” he said, “I talked to different people, engaged them in conversation and learned about their political views. I learned a lot.” Joseph’s responsibilities included outreach to the African community, in addition to a variety of other tasks. He loved the chance to gain new skills while being given an opportunity to meet other immigrants from the African community. We could tell that he really enjoyed it – at one fundraiser Joseph was spotted joining in a Cameroonian dance!
