Opportunities Plus

Opportunities Plus places low-income, documented, immigrant youth, ages 15-21, in six or eight week internships with local businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits.

Prior to their internship placements, they participate in a job skills workshop, where they develop a cover letter, resume, and interview skills. Through the duration of the internship we provide participants with a stipend to cover their food and transportation costs for what would traditionally be an unpaid internship.

The goal of the program is to combat cultural obstacles to prospective career paths, stressing the values of professionalism, freedom of choice, self determination, and the pursuit of a fulfilling career.

By the end of their internship, participants will have become more comfortable applying for employment on their own, more comfortable in the American workplace, and have gained a better understanding of a professional work environment.

The Opportunities Plus program provides the students with:

Scholarship – A stipend to cover subsistence while taking part in their 8 week internship

Work Placement – We work with a series of partners across Local and Federal Government, Non Profits and local business to secure an 8 week internship

Career Skills Workshops – We provide training to help our students create a resume, cover letter and practice key skills such as Interview techniques and general office etiquette.

Intensive and individualized guidance and mentoring – Our Program Officers are on call for our interns throughout their 8 week placements to help with whatever they require.

Program Updates

Three of our Prince George’s County interns (Northwestern and High Point High Schools) have been working this summer at the Hyattsville Branch Library. They have spent their time helping patrons with library equipment, sorting and organizing books and other pieces of media, and learning about how a public library functions. They have also helped with the library’s summer meals program, which provides free lunches to members of the community. They even had the chance to launch their own summer program, which turned out to be an origami class! We are so proud of the youth and the contributions they have made to the library and to the community. We look forward to seeing what else they’re able to accomplish for the rest of the summer.
