Dear Reader ,

Liberty’s Promise is back and running for the Fall 2023 semester! As we welcome back familiar faces and new students to our programs, we are sure to curate each semester differently from the last, in order to meet the growing needs and never ending curiosities of our youth.

At the beginning of each semester, we work carefully with our new group of students and seniors to familiarize ourselves with the common interests and aspirations they share. Our youth have expressed interest in careers that range from creative arts to public policy and medicine. This fall, we have special visits from guest speaker Natalie Muir-Young, a pediatric dentist at Young Smiles, Richard Cerros, who is the community relations coordinator for congressmen Beyer, and Tanejah Jones, from UMD SAFE center. In addition, programs in Alexandria will be having a visit from SAPCA (Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria) to inform them on the dangers of rising substances that are targeting our youth.

Some exciting field trips that we have going on this semester include: college campus visits to George Mason University and The George Washington University, The Museum of Natural History, and The Museum of African American History and Culture. As the semester continues, we can’t wait to report back on the experience of these visits and the impact they had on students!

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! This month, we celebrate our youth that come from Spanish speaking countries from around the world!

To help celebrate, programs threw a Hispanic Heritage party where traditional dishes such as pupusas and tacos, and drinks like horchata were given to students to try for the first time. Activities included were “Dia De Los Muertos” skeleton painting, coloring worksheets on historic figures such as Roberto Clemente and Cesar Chavez, and word searches that also helped promote a mental break from the PSAT and SAT exams that took place this past week.

As November approaches, we look forward to planning community service projects such as preparing food bags to donate for Thanksgiving, and getting in the spirit of giving back to our communities!

Robert M. Ponichtera, Ph.D.

Executive Director
