Opportunities Plus
Opportunities Plus places low-income, documented, immigrant youth, ages 15-21, in six or eight week internships with local businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits.
Prior to their internship placements, they participate in a job skills workshop, where they develop a cover letter, resume, and interview skills. Through the duration of the internship we provide participants with a stipend to cover their food and transportation costs for what would traditionally be an unpaid internship.
The goal of the program is to combat cultural obstacles to prospective career paths, stressing the values of professionalism, freedom of choice, self determination, and the pursuit of a fulfilling career.
By the end of their internship, participants will have become more comfortable applying for employment on their own, more comfortable in the American workplace, and have gained a better understanding of a professional work environment.
The Opportunities Plus program provides the students with:
Scholarship – A stipend to cover subsistence while taking part in their 8 week internship
Work Placement – We work with a series of partners across Local and Federal Government, Non Profits and local business to secure an 8 week internship
Career Skills Workshops – We provide training to help our students create a resume, cover letter and practice key skills such as Interview techniques and general office etiquette.
Intensive and individualized guidance and mentoring – Our Program Officers are on call for our interns throughout their 8 week placements to help with whatever they require.

This summer, 13 Montgomery County, Maryland youth completed internships with a variety of host sites across the county. Two students from Wheaton High School, Emerson and Raymond, interned with Montgomery Parks in their volunteer services department. During their eight week internship, they learned about adaptive mountain biking, shared information at community outreach events, and participated in over 15 park clean-ups. Emerson shared that, going to community outreach events was his favorite part of the internship, because he was able to use his Spanish language skills. Both interns expressed that they learned valuable professional skills that will help them in their future careers.
