February Alumni Spotlight: Vincent Banda (Roosevelt High School)

My journey with Liberty's Promise began in 2016 when I moved from Malawi, Africa. Joining this incredible program marked a transformative chapter in my life, offering me invaluable experiences and shaping my trajectory as an immigrant in the United States. Liberty's Promise became more than just a program; it became a support system that helped me navigate a new culture and integrate seamlessly into American society.

Through Liberty's Promise, I forged meaningful connections and friendships, none more impactful than with individuals like my Program Officer, Melissa. Their selflessness and guidance left an indelible mark on me, providing not only academic insights but also instilling a sense of American values. Liberty's Promise empowered me with the tools to succeed, teaching me not only to be a person of value within my community but also fostering a deep appreciation for the democratic ideals and freedom that define this great nation.

As a college graduate from George Mason University, I attribute a significant part of my success to the lessons learned and the support received during my time with Liberty's Promise. This program not only made the immigrant experience affirmative for me but also instilled a profound sense of pride in contributing to the democratic traditions and egalitarian values that form the bedrock of America.

I am immensely grateful for the opportunities Liberty's Promise provided, and I am proud to be a testament to the positive impact this program has on young immigrants.

Hear what Director of Northern Virginia & Washington D.C. Programs, Melissa Gelinas, shares about Vincent:

I met Vincent during my first semester working at Roosevelt, after he had already participated in a prior semester of programs we ran there. I had been conducting my CE-BELL program (entirely in Spanish) at the school, when a few weeks into the semester, Vincent and a friend showed up and said they’d like to join. They were the first non-Spanish speaking participants to join the program, which we ended up conducting bilingually.

During his time in Liberty’s Promise, Vincent was a quiet leader, preferring to set an example for other students rather than tell them what to do. He has stayed in touch since his graduation, and it has been incredible to see the success he has had since. After graduating, he attended George Mason University, where despite having his college experience interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, he graduated this December with his Bachelor’s Degree. I was honored to be invited to the ceremony to see him walk across the stage, and meet the incredible community of support Vincent has created for himself. He is a true example of taking advantage of the opportunities available here, and I have no doubt will continue to do great things now that he’s graduated!
