May Alumni Spotlight: Sherif Mahmoud, (Alexandria City High School)

Liberty’s Promise proudly presents this month's alumni spotlight featuring Sherif Mahmoud,, a graduate of T.C. Williams High School, now known as Alexandria City High School, in the vibrant city of Alexandria, VA. Sherif graduated in 2021 and has since embarked on an inspiring journey, currently serving in the United States Marine Corps.

We had a conversation with Sherif about his journey, and here's what he shared, providing valuable insights into his experiences and reflections.

“My journey began in Egypt, where I was born and raised. In 2016, my family and I immigrated to the United States, seeking new opportunities. Adapting to American life wasn't easy, especially with the language barrier and cultural differences, but Liberty's Promise (LP) played a crucial role in helping me adjust and thrive.

Looking back on my high school years, LP was more than just a club, it was a supportive community that made me feel at home. LP provided a nurturing environment where fellow immigrants and ESL students like me could break down language barriers and exchange cultures. Through LP's guidance, I gained confidence in socializing and communicating in English, skills that have served me well in my journey.

During high school, LP was there for me every step of the way, answering questions, helping me hone my public speaking skills, and supporting my job and college searches. With LP's help, I have not only excelled academically, but also developed essential life skills that continue to shape my path today.

After graduating in 2021, I took a bold step forward and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, driven by my commitment to serve my new country. I credit LP for instilling in me the values of accountability, teamwork, and determination, which have been instrumental in my military service and beyond.

Among my fondest memories of LP are the camaraderie and teamwork within the club. The sense of unity and support among members left a lasting impression on me, reinforcing the importance of community and collaboration.

I'd 100 percent recommend Liberty’s Promise to anyone, not just immigrants or ESL students. If you're looking for a fun, welcoming club experience, LP is the way to go. It's not only helpful during high school but also provides valuable tips for your journey ahead.

My advice to current students, I say enjoy what you do, work very hard, give 110 percent of yourself at all times, never let go of your dreams, the people who love you, and what makes you happy, and last but not least, be different."

Thank you, Sherif, for sharing your inspiring story. Your journey exemplifies the spirit of perseverance and the limitless potential within each of us.
