June Alumni Spotlight: Osvaldo Ramos Marquez, (Northwood High School)

This month’s Alumni Spotlight shines on Osvaldo Ramos Marquez, a Liberty’s Promise Program Facilitator and an alum from Northwood High School.

Osvaldo moved to the United States from El Salvador in 2017, and graduated in 2022 from Northwood High School. After high school, he enrolled in Montgomery College, where he is currently studying Mechanical Engineering and is on track to graduate in 2024.

Osvaldo’s Journey:

"I was born in El Salvador and moved to the United States at 17. My first job was landscaping, and I didn’t know any English. Many people tried to speak to me, but I couldn’t understand a word. After six months, my parents decided I should go to school as a Spanish speaker. Navigating school was difficult until I learned about Liberty's Promise (LP). This program helped me engage more with youth from my country and other countries. LP empowered me to undergo personal growth, not be afraid, and embrace each challenge with patience and accountability. LP supported me with self-development and was always there when I needed help.

Serving as the president of the program helped me develop leadership skills and interact with young people. LP taught me many things I use in my college career and professional life, like asking for help when I need it and not being afraid to talk about my feelings and chosen path.

I have many memories from LP, but my favorite is when we went on field trips. We shared many moments together, and these trips helped us get out of our comfort zones and create remarkable times together.

I chose to give back by becoming a program facilitator at Northwood High School because of the invaluable support I received as a student.

I enjoy working with students and assisting them with their college preparation. LP was instrumental in shaping my high school experience, and now I am eager to support students who are in the same position I once was.

I find great joy in sharing knowledge and guiding students in their career choices. In LP, we are a family, dedicated to supporting one another and building strong, college-ready students. The program fosters a profound sense of belonging and mutual support.

My advice to current students: don’t be afraid to take steps towards a better future. Get involved with programs like LP; they offer valuable information and support. Take the step, say, ‘Here I am,’ and do better every time you get the chance. Do not be afraid of failing because it offers invaluable lessons that propel you forward with greater resilience and wisdom.”

Thank you, Osvaldo, for sharing your story. We are excited to see what the future has in store for you!

Osvaldo’s story is a testament to the opportunities Liberty's Promise provides. To our students: seize these resources, get involved, ask for help, and don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, as our alum Osvaldo shared with us. And to our community: your support transforms lives. Consider contributing to ensure more students access these opportunities that can shape their futures.
